Washington DC police told reporters on Friday that a 29-year-old man was killed by lightning in Lafayette Square

 north of the White House, on Wednesday evening, according to media reports. A 70-year-old Wisconsin

couple also died after suffering burns in the accident. Along with these three, the condition

 of others who were scorched has not been given. Emergency service personnel had earlier reported that

In a statement Friday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, "They are saddened by the deaths

caused by lightning at Lafayette Park. "Our deepest condolences to the families of those who have

 lost their families and we pray for the speedy recovery of those injured," the statement said.

According to the National Lightning Safety Council, at least 12 people have been killed by
